The Sleeman name has been immersed in beer tradition for five generations. In fact, the Sleeman family wrote the book on it — literally. The Sleeman brewing tradition in Canada extends back to 1834 when John H. Sleeman arrived in Ontario from Cornwall, England. By 1851, he started the first Sleeman brewery to be located in Guelph, Ontario, brewing small 100-barrel batches.
That passion still exists today in the 1,100 people that work for Sleeman Breweries Ltd. Every aspect of the beer we produce is reflective of the talented team across Canada. While we all maintain the entrepreneurial spirit ingrained in the Sleeman name, we’re meticulous about the beer and the brands that we care for on a daily basis.
Sleeman Breweries was built by bringing together three of Canada’s best craft breweries - Unibroue in Chambly, QC; Sleeman in Guelph, ON; and Okanagan Spring in Vernon, BC. Sapporo Breweries Ltd., known for its rigorous Japanese brewing standards, acquired Sleeman in 2006, because the companies shared the same level of passion and discipline for high quality beer. Today, the company produces some of the most coveted beer brands in the country and we are happy to make them available at retailers, restaurants and bars across Canada.
Today, Sleeman Breweries is Canada’s third largest national brewery. We may have become a bigger company, but we have never lost sight of our original vision to bring Canadians better beer. We’ve built an incredible portfolio of beer brands in Canada; great Canadian brands such as Sleeman, Okanagan Spring and Unibroue, combined with world-class beers such as Sapporo, Old Milwaukee and Pabst Blue Ribbon. No matter what you’re looking for in a beer, we’re sure we have something you’ll love.
After all, we believe Canadians deserve better beer.
Everyone deserves great beer. Our history is one of craftsmanship and quality, so we will not waver from our commitment to brew great beer. At Sleeman Breweries, we take added pride in the diversity of the brands in our portfolio and know that whenever Canadians are looking for beer, we can provide them with a better choice.Discover our brands

Most Canadians consume alcohol in moderation. There is also growing evidence that beer, when consumed responsibly and appropriately can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Beer Canada and its member companies, including Sleeman Breweries Ltd, have recognized and supported the responsible consumption of its products for many years by contributing to the development of responsible consumption programs and partnerships which advance a key goal of the National Alcohol Strategy, to cultivate a culture of moderation. We believe that these activities and programs are successful in increasing the awareness of responsible drinking and reducing the harmful use of alcohol. Responsible consumption efforts are varied and include: support of Canada’s first-ever Low Risk Drinking Guidelines, which provide helpful advice on what constitutes healthy and safe drinking; the Change the Conversation drinking driving campaign developed in cooperation with the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) and arrive alive DRIVE SOBER; investments in research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), including sponsorship of the annual Fetal Alcohol Canadian Expertise (FACE) Conference; and support for Motherisk, a national bilingual toll-free medical helpline for new and expectant mothers.
