Supporting the next generation of women in STEM

At Sleeman Breweries, we’re committed to breaking down barriers for the next generation. That’s why we created the Future on Tap Scholarship. By supporting gender diverse students in their studies, we’re helping open doors and live up to our commitment to Better Beer, Better People, Getting Better.

Through this program, we provide two $2,500 scholarships to students who identify as Women, Non-Binary, Transgender or Two-Spirit who are enrolled in brewing studies or science, technology, engineering or math programs at Canadian post-secondary institutions. We award one scholarship to a student studying in English and one to a student studying in French.

“The scholarships were inspired by our International Women’s Day activities,” says Adrienne Fox, National Director of Human Resources at Sleeman Breweries. “The women who took part in our events wanted to do something to make a difference for the people who are going to follow in their footsteps. The scholarships are a great way for us to make things a bit easier for people who haven’t always felt welcome in our line of work.”

This year, 130 students applied for the Future on Tap Scholarship.

In 2024, Sleeman Breweries is proud to award scholarships to Michaela Gilks and Angelica Gregoire.

Michaela is pursusing a combined degree in the honours physics and honours philosophy at the University of Calgary and hopes to continue on with graduate studies in physics. Using the knowledge she gains as a student, Michaela aims to develop diagnostic tools for neurological disorders.

In her application, Michaela shared her commitment to positively impacting the lives of others. She is the 2025 Chair of the Canadian Conference for undergraduate women in physics and is the executive undergraduate representative for the Canadian Association of Physics’ Division for Gender Equity in Physics. Through this work and her other volunteer roles, Michaela says, “I’m dedicated to representing and empowering gender minorities in physics.”

Angelica Gregoire is studying biology at Université de Saint-Boniface in Manitoba. Some hands-on experience working with a group of local agronomists helped Angelica discover a passion for that field of study. Now, she wants to help encourage other young women to pursue agronomy in school and as a potential career. Angelica says, “As more women join the agriculture field, it will become the norm so that we will be shown more respect and acceptance.”

As a member of Jeunes manitobains des communautés associées (JMCA), Angelica was involved in helping young francophones in Manitoba to be future leaders in their communities and to be proud of their French-Canadian heritage and culture.

With credentials like these and a drive to make the world a better place, we’re confident this year’s scholarship recipients are going to do big things! Congratulations, Michaela and Angelica.
